Brett Favre earned a football scholarship at Southern Mississippi, playing the quarterback position of course. However on July 14, 1990, just before the start of his senior year, Favre was in a near-fatal car accident. As he left his parent’s house, he went around a bend and lost control of his car – which then flipped three times and slammed into a tree. One of his brothers took a golf club and smashed a car window so that Favre could be evacuated. As they rushed to the hospital in the ambulance, Favre calls asking his mother, “‘Will I be able to play football again?'”

Despite the fact that doctors removed 30 inches of Favre’s small intestine – he was back in action six weeks later! September 8th marks the day Brett Favre led Southern Miss to an astonishing comeback victory over Alabama. Gene Stallings, the Alabama coach, said, “You can call it a miracle or a legend or whatever you want to. I just know that on that day, Brett Favre was larger than life.”
