There were instances when the jokes and the responses were genuine, but the show also employed fakery. Some celebrities were previously aware of it and simply accepted it.

The fact that so many people believed this show to be factual is actually rather astonishing. The show features affluent teenagers planning amazing sweet 16 parties. It appeared that the more intense the situation, the better. On the broadcast, there were numerous instances of crying and breakdowns, but many of them were merely staged reactions for the cameras. It shouldn’t be all that surprising given what we already know about the sector.
