Chaonei No. 81

Location: Beijing, China
Year: 1910
Cost: $1.5 million*

The Beijing municipal government has named Chaonei No. 81 a historic structure, preserving it from demolition. Chaonei No. 81 is also regarded as Beijing’s most haunted house, and it was the setting for The House That Never Dies, a popular horror film in China. Following that, in 2014, there was a renewed interest in examining the abandoned site. The brick house has stood since the early 1900s, and rumors about what (or who) haunts it have evolved over time. The most frequent narrative is that a suicide woman-turned-ghost haunts Chaonei No. 81, causing strange disappearances.

Waverly Hills Sanatorium

Location: Louisville, Kentucky
Year: 1910
Cost: $8 million*

The Waverly Hills Sanitorium built in 1910 and was designed to house tuberculosis sufferers. The White Plague, an outbreak of tuberculosis that killed many individuals, had devastated Jefferson County, Kentucky, where the Sanitorium was located. These fatalities inspired the creation of the Sanitorium. Streptomycin, an antibiotic that cured tuberculosis, was developed in 1961. In 1962, Waverly Hills was turned into Woodhaven Medical Services, a nursing home. The state shut down Woodhaven in 1982 owing to patient neglect and abuse. The facility then fell into disrepair, and as with every abandoned sanitorium, legends of hauntings circulate.
