Istana Woodneuk
Location: Singapore
Year: 1932
Cost: $3.7 billion*
Istana Woodneuk is a large palace near the Singapore Botanic Gardens. The majestic two-story building, completed in 1932, has a rich and complex history as Sultan Ibrahim and Sultanah Helen’s house. The government bought Tyersall Park land and home in 1990 without restoring them. Instead, the billion-dollar castle was permitted to deteriorate. The property was dangerously decrepit and beyond repair after a massive fire in 2006. It’s heartbreaking given the property’s $3.7 billion construction and furnishings cost. The mansion is now an empty shell in lush vegetation and neglected grounds.
