Gabe, now it’s time to go to the U.S.
The Adamses traveled to Brazil with an offer to adopt, but getting the adoption process completed was not easy for Janelle and Ron. The process took a very long time and required a lot of paperwork. The first step was to assess whether they had the financial resources and environment to take in a child with such a severe disability. The Adamses had adopted many times before. They had adopted children abandoned by their parents in the U.S. and around the world. Gabe’s case was a particularly difficult one because of his disability.

Gabe, off to America
A New Home
It took a long time and a lot of work, but they were finally able to get permission to take Gabe home from the orphanage in Brazil to their own home. The boy with no arms, legs, or family had a new home in the United States, loving parents, and 13 brothers and sisters all at once. The baby, who had no name in the Brazilian orphanage, received a new name, Gabe, and officially became an American and was adopted by the Adamses. What a change of fate! When he arrived in the U.S., all of his siblings were there to greet him at the airport and he was welcomed by everyone, which was truly touching!
