Constanta Casino

Location: Romania
Year: 1910
Cost: $8 million (adjusted for inflation)

The original Constanta Casino in Romania dates back to the 19th century, although its contemporary shape dates to the early 1900s. The city intended to mimic luxurious casinos on the French Riviera to attract crowds. They spent $8 million on a luxurious building with chandeliers and sumptuous carpets by 1910. It thrived until 1990, when it became too expensive to run. More than 30 years have passed since its closure. Despite funding to reuse the facility, nothing has been done as of 2020. The structure overlooks the ocean and promenade, one of the city’s most attractive spots. Its proximity to the Aquarium makes it a prime location that might make developers a lot of money if they could afford it.

Disney’s River Country

Location: Florida
Year: 1976
Cost: $10 million+*

It’s easy to focus on Disney World’s famous attractions, but much simpler to forget about their past. The park’s latest attraction was River Country in Bay Lake, Florida, in 1976. Disney portrayed the park as a family-friendly swimming hole. Not everything was perfect. River Country lost popularity after Disney developed Typhoon Lagoon. After closing permanently in 2005, it sat vacant for 17 years until Disney announced it would be converted into a hotel in 2022. The growth is encouraging, but it shows that Disney is not always magical. Old attractions are replaced by newer ones and die faster than Walt would have shouted “Cut!”
