Chernobyl

Location: Ukraine
Year: 1193
Cost $1.5 billion*

Nuclear power facilities are expensive to create and costly to repair. Chernobyl exemplifies all these worst-case situations. In 1972, the Vladimir Ilyich Lenin Nuclear Power Plant outside Pripyat employed many city residents. The 1986 Chernobyl tragedy damaged the surrounding land so much that it had to be abandoned. Previously, 14,000 people lived nearby; now barely 1,000 do. Other than “Owner lives here” signage, the town is full of abandoned residences. HBO turned the disaster into an award-winning series in 2019. History remembers the accident and its aftermath. Chernobyl is a constant reminder of the dangers of nuclear power and how vulnerable even seemingly stable communities are.

Underwater Sculpture Park

Location: Molinere
Year: 2006
Cost: Unknown

The Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park located off Grenada’s west coast in the Caribbean Sea. Divers can see something unexpected and terrifying for $2. The Jason deCaires Taylor-designed concrete human sculptures include a ring of kids holding hands and a bike-riding male. The sculptures have been submerged since 2006, but it’s unclear how much the artist would have paid to realize his underwater goal. Despite being tarnished and ruined by the tides, the tourist attraction remains popular but scary. Even on a busy diving day, guests might expect a spooky sight. After all, human-like entities playing at the bottom of the water are rare. The sculpture park is still there, but it’s not as shiny as it was.
